Does Sun Protective Clothing Really Work?
Anti-ultraviolet clothing does have the function of blocking ultraviolet rays, but their effect depends on many factors. According to the explanation of professional doctors, ordinary clothes actually have a certain protective effect on UV rays because of their weak penetration.
However, professional UV protective apparel usually uses special materials and techniques to provide a stronger anti-ultraviolet effect. For example, under the same color, ordinary clothing made of 100% cotton may have better sun protection performance than professional sun protection apparel. In addition, the color of clothes is also an important factor. The darker the color, the better the protective effect.
When purchasing UV protection clothing, consumers should pay attention to the UPF value of the product, that is, the ultraviolet protection coefficient and the UVA transmittance. According to China’s national standard GB/T 18830-2009 “Evaluation of Anti-UV Performance of Textiles”, only when UPF is greater than 40 and UVA transmittance is less than 5%, can a product be called an anti-ultraviolet product.
